According to the Skanda Purana, Kirtimukha was created by Lord Shiva from the fiery energy of his third eye after a demon (Rahu) disrespected Goddess Parvati. The fierce being was extremely powerful and hungry.
As it moved forward to destroy the demon, Rahu became terrified and immediately surrendered before Lord Shiva. Since the demon had asked for forgiveness, Shiva stopped the creature from attacking him.
But the fiery being’s hunger remained uncontrollable. To satisfy its hunger, Lord Shiva commanded it to consume its own body. In complete devotion and surrender, the being obeyed and slowly consumed itself until only its face remained.
Impressed by its loyalty, Lord Shiva named it “Kirtimukha,” meaning “Face of Glory,” and blessed it as the eternal guardian of sacred spaces and entrances against negativity and evil energies.
